E.L.Danielyan:Methodology of Research of the Cultural Identity Concept within the Scope of Dialogue of Civilizations

Culture presents genetically the entity of cognitive and creative, artistic and symbolic, language and religious, traditional and moral foundations in a historically developed ethno-cultural environment. Cultural creation is promoted by a social order – a constituent element of civilization.

Methodology of research of the cultural identity’s concept is directed to the elucidation of the problem’s inner and outer factors. Culture’s originality refers to its inner proto-genetic essence in homeland, serving as a source of cultural identity through which people come to identify with specific ideas that are characteristic to national environment.

The term cultural identity is also reflecting the idea of perception of cultural originality as by each national specimen out of its home country, as well as its hosting environment in the diverse world. Preservation of strong cultural identity of ethno-social group out of homeland is an indicator of its healthy roots, and, on the other hand - of the level of tolerance of the state and society a part of which it has become. Thus, the research of cultural identity helps to compare both self-preserving and intercultural processes within the mainstream of the dialogue of civilizations.

Cultures are revealed by their many-sided nature in the system of universal values and, at the same time, cultural identity is important for people’s sense of self and their relation to others.

Cultural identity owing to its structural components may have narrow and broad application, thus the field of its studies’ methodological instruments is specified or widened - boosting formation of new interpretational definitions. Such methodology helps to study on the one hand the outside influences away from the place of the original culture, their leveling, assimilating and, in certain unfavorable conditions - destructive character, i.e. to understand the complexities surrounding cultural identity, on the other - the ways of preservation of the values of original cultures as principal contributors to the world cultural heritage through sharing by states an inherent part of their constituting elements that create common ground, and diverse means of identifying with each other. Cultural values may serve as important sources and stimulating factors of the dialogue of civilizations.
